Latest EDM Count - as at 19/12/2006
Update as at 19/12/2006:
MPs continue to sign up to support the PJM.
Don Touhig's EDM 356 now has 124 signatures.
Michael Mates' EDM now has 55 signatures.
We've just added up the total number of signatures supporting the PJM in 2005/6 ... 324 from 172 individual MPs! Staggering support!
Thank you, our elected representatives, for supporting the British veterans that the unelected civil servants continue to snub - and for supporting our just case that those same civil servants continue to disregard.
And we know of several more that have signed but the details have not yet been updated on the Commons web site.
Our campaign has exceeded all expectations - especially those expectations of those Government Departments where a handful of civil servants are even now trying to find a way to say they are the only ones in step.
Please Note: MPs start their Christmas recess at the end of today. We may get another EDM update tomorrow, but we may have to wait until Parliament returns on the 8th Janaury 2007.

 Re: Sandra Gidley MP
This good lady took rather an inordinate amound of time to sign our EDMs - but after a few gentle reminders she came up with this gem (knickers in a bit of a twist methinks !):
"......If I promise to do something then I do it. I did not undertake to sign
the EDM within a certain timescale as I tend to sign batches of them
every couple of weeks or so. The EDMs you refer to have now been signed
but I do not know when this will appear on the system as there is
sometimes a slight delay.[sic]
Yours sincerely

Likewise. I find it difficult to keep track.
I sent 1031 emails to MPs regarding EDMs.
And I was very pleased with the result. Many MPs taking the time and trouble to respond. So if any supporter hasn't yet sent an EDM Billy Doo, I recommend that they do. The methodology I use for individual MPs was as follows:
1. Trace the MP's name (from http://www.upmystreet.com/commons/l/)
e.g. Angela Eagle
2. Google the MP.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Angela+Eagle+MP&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
3. From the Search Results, click on Theyworkforyou
http://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/angela_eagle/wallasey
4. Look on the right hand side for the Contact Details link
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/person/contactdetails/0,,-1521,00.html
5. Use the email addy shown (usually, but not always, at the Commons email):

George F wrote:Barry, Dr Julian Lewis MP is no doubt a supporter of veterans. After reading this statement I wonder he why he didn't sign Michael Mates EDM.
Let's find out, George. Here is my email to him:

Subject: PJM - EDMs 356 and 375
Dear Dr Lewis,
I see from the EDM web site that you have not yet had the opportunity of signing either Don Touhigs EDM 356 or Michael Mates EDM 375.
You have supported British Veterans as well as the PJM in the past and I am writing to ask you if you would do so again.
It is very pleasing to see just how many Conservative Party MPs have signed either or both of the EDMs - Michael Ancram, Mark Harper, Richard Benyon, Robert Key, Dr Liam Fox, James Gray, Sir Malcolm Rifkind and so on.
We also have support in the Lords including your Defence Spokesman Lord Astor.
Our case has cross-party support and the Rt Hon Sir Menzies Campbell and the Liberal Democrat Defence Team support us, as do many in the Labour (Including the last three Veterans Ministers) and in the smaller parties.
175 MPs have signed EDMs supporting the PJM - 328 signatures so far ... and I have been promised many more.
I very much hope that you will see fit to show support for this just case.
Thank you for your time and trouble.
Barry

I'll second that, Jock!
Congratulations, Valentine, for persevering and winning support from Ruth Kelly.
Who cares about the reference by a Cabinet Minister to Tom Watson who resigned because he couldn't stick Blurr anymore - the fact is that she has written to somebody! And Ruth doesn't need us to tell her that her civil servants can't even get the name of her fellow Govt Ministers right!
Great stuff - wonderful lobbying.

 MP's support
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and wanted to say how much I appreciate the efforts being made on behalf of all ex-servicemen who may qualify for the medal. I only recently applied for mine via a local volunteer in the Malaya and Borneo Veterans' Association.
I emailed my MP yesterday, and he has promised to sign the EMS next Monday when the Commons returns from Christmas break.
His name is John Whittingdale and represents Maldon and East Chelmsford.
Geoff.

 Re: MP's Support
Let me proffer my welcome too Geoff!
.....and as for the 'spelling mistake'...fear not, none of us will find much room to criticise you...we have all, at some time or other, demonstrated our fumble fingered keyboarding skills and occasional lapses into a 'senior moment'...what matters is that you took action as and when needed by 'chivvying' your MP...let's hope many will follow your example.
