 Ale
Ale I understand. From those long gone days up country I remember it was Tiger or Anchor in pint bottles...But wot the kinell was Ski? I once tried something made from a palm tree but apart from that, and other than ale it was whisky if you could afford it on about 6 dollars a week (if that). Wot did we get paid in them days, Jock? Ski, I arsk yer. I bet it was something poncy made in Borneo, but I'm sure Jock will drink it.......just as I would.

Bought a few copies this morning. First thing I checked was to see if it was region specific. It doesn't seem to be. At least, there are no indications to that effect on the box so it should be playable in the UK, or anywhere else for that matter.
Will now settle down to watch it.

Ale? Who said Ale?
Of the most unforgettable events during my 2 years in Malaya were the R&R visits to what the Kiwi's called " Rest Camp 300 Lumut " This was the place where you learnt 'NOT TO DRINK' before the sun went down. We loaded up a 3tonner full of Tiger beer in Ipoh and headed out for Lumut. The last few hundred yards were the worst, trying to get this fully Tiger-laden 3tonner through the jungle right up to the beach before passing out - well before the days of drink-drive!
And for those who do not know where Lumut is - it's on the West Coast of Malaya opposite the Island of Pankor. Same place as Tony and Cherie were supposed to be staying during their working holiday in Malaysia before it all went horible wrong for them! Ahhhhhhhhhhh. I understand a Millionaire businessman purchased the Island and is now one of the most sought after holiday places in the world. Anyway, this is what it looked like back in the good-old black & white '60s.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers Lumut in the '50s? I think they had an "Outward Bound" school there too.

REMEMBER' SANDYCROFT' ON PENANG A SIMILAR THING.OUR SHIP HIT A SUBMERGED LOG OFF BORNEO SOMEWHERE,TURNED THE PORT SHAFT INTO A TULIP,SIX WEEKS IN DRYDOCK AT SEMBAWANG,ITS ANOTHER YARN BUT THE DAMAGED ONE HAD FOUR BLADES,THE ONLY SPARE THAT WOULD FIT ONLY HAD THREE! SO THATS HOW WE WENT BACK TO SEA ,PORT SHAFT 3 AN STBD 4,OR AS A FIRST IN MARINE ENGINEERING 7 BETWEEN 2.ANYHOW THE SHIP GAVE STATION LEAVE,AND WE AS A WHOLE MESS WENT UP COUNTRY ,THE TRAIN WAS LIKE SOMETHING FROM THE WILD WEST,CRATED CHICKENS,A GOAT,YOU COULD EVEN GET OFF FROM THE PLATFORMS AT EACH END AND JOG ALONGSIDE GOING THRU THE PLANTATIONS,UP VIA K.L. IPOH,CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE WE GOT OFF ,BUT WENT OVER TO PENANG ,VIA A STEAM PADDLE WHEEL FERRY,AND MET BY A SQUADDIE IN A TRUCK. HAPPY DAYS,AND A REMINDER OF TIMES PAST WHEN SHIPS DEPLOYED FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AT A TIME,CAN REMEMBER STOPPING COUNTING AFTER ENTERING SINGA'S 22 TIMES FROM T'OTHER PLACE.

I remember Sandycroft well. My friend tells me it is now a girl's school. The isolated beaches are now filled with resorts and other concrete monstrosities. I recall the trip on the train from Johore, change at KL up to Georgetown then ferry to Penang. Remember the local talent they used to ship in for the Thursday night dance. I have a few photos of the place tucked away somewhere. Oh such good days.

 Penang, etc.
Got two days on Penang, after a REME Sgt confirmed to base that our QL 3 tonner was poorly. It was perfectly ok but such things were arranged from time to time. Three of us just wandered about in the usual Tiger haze, but I think I remember visiting a place called, " The Snake Temple," or was I so pissed as to have invented the memory? One of our trio was a Chinese chap who knew about such exotic locations......but can any of you lucky enough to have had a longer stay there confirm this dodgy recollection of 50 years ago.
Only official RandR I got was when I was sent on a, "Religious Course??!!" to an island off Singers called (?) Blakangmati. The word "oxymoron" comes to mind thinking about it and religion was the least thing I learnt about. In sober moments I wandered about the island sketching the old Brit gun positions, famous for facing the wrong way when the Japs arrived. I had another stay for a few days on another island off Singers waiting for a lift somewhere with RASC Water Transport Coy. I think that wee paradise was called Paulabrani, or some such. That Tiger ale certainly did strange things with the memory, when not under the affluence of its high incahol my recollections are generally clear-ish.

Yep....Snake temple at Sungai Kluang (River of the Fruit Bat) on Penang...good place to take your pals to if they were 'greeners' and a trifle tipsy...them snakes will sober you up fast!
Pulau Belakang Mati (The Island of Death from the back)...was a WW11 POW camp just off the Singapore South coast.....and I understand not a particularly salubrious place at that time....was a lovely little island as I recall.

Snakes? and who said Snakes?
Well done that man - and this little fella ended his days looking at the wrong end of a .38 bullet when he tried sneaking into bed with the wrong guy - taken not far from Penang too.
I'll bet they don't get snakes with their GSMs in Northern Island?

Sandycroft, or most the buildings, does still exist. It is now the Dalat International School. Below is a link to a photo I took a couple of years ago:
http://image42.webshots.com/42/9/20/87/2042920870087057978pfkMwC_fs.jpg
The Snake Temple is now virtually in the middle of a concrete jungle, the Industrial Zone near the airport.
Also, the Pagoda at Air (Ayer) Itam has been extensively rebuilt and extended.
I have a few more photos of present day Penang here:

....Thank you for that pointer Laurie...I understand now....every day we learn something new eh?
....I was surprised to learn that the Snake Temple is now "in the middle of a concrete jungle"!....but then I guess the world moves on...most of us would probably have much difficulty in recognisng (or even finding?) our 'old stamping grounds' now...my information is that the camp I was in at Paroi, Seremban, is now a sports complex of some sort and that Batu Cantonment, where I finished off my time 'in the Fed' has been transformed into an area for small industries...
Sudah agak lama kawan lah...
