Post Parliamentary Defence Policy Debate - 16th October 2007
Don Touhig to Des Brown during yesterday's debate.,

"I could not speak of the value agenda without mentioning the campaign by veterans who fought in Malaysia to be allowed to wear the Pingat Jasa Malaysia medal. I have tabled early-day motion 356 on that and hon. Members on both sides of the House have generously supported it. However, we have to do more. We have a duty to honour the commitment of the 35,000 of our boys who fought in the jungles of Malaysia. They earned that medal and they have the right to wear it. A greater degree of honour falls on them than on the members of the honours and decorations committee who are resisting the legitimate request to wear that medal. I wonder how many of those who serve on that committee served in the jungle. Probably the only jungle they know is the jungle around Whitehall".

Well said Don, truly pushiing the agenda for us. Smile

I just had to repeat that quote, John. The Don is a gentleman and one who understands what is going on in this struggle.

Just sent this to The Don:

Subject: PJM - Your Commons Speech 16/10/2007

Dear Mr Touhig,

I write to thank you for your support for British veterans yesterday. It meant a great deal to those of us who served in the steaming, inhospitable, jungles of the Far East.

It also means a lot to our families - and to the widows and relatives of those who have died.

The MoD have called us "Disaffected veterans" because we had the temerity to ask for a review of the PJM recommendation, and they pasted that on their MoD public web sites.

I was told by one MoD civil servant that I could stuff my PJM back into my Kelloggs packet for all the medal's status meant to him because it was not given approval for wear.

Your EDM and support in the Commons did, I am sure, help Ian Pearson to change his mind and publicly declare that his Ministerial Statement of 31st January 2006 was flawed and should be amended to allow the PJM to be worn. He has written to state that he is now lobbying for the right to wear the PJM.

Your support helps offset the deep sense of injustice that this confused and incongruous recommendation causes us - and it helps restore some of our self-esteem that has been pulverised by the contemptuous attitude towards us of the civil servants (and some notable members of the HD Committee).

Thank you again,

Barry

We have no greater Ally than that of Don Touhig MP. Pity the MPs in the inner cabinet were not more supportive. I shall definitely e-mail him and thank him for his support in our campaign.

I have sent this to Don copied to Michael, James Gray and my chum at the Mail

Sir, I have been a Conservative all of my adult life and I have never voted for or supported a Socialist Politician, until now. You have shown me that there are men of honour at Westminster and I applaud your courage in standing behind us in this issue. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the thousands of veterans and people who believe in justice in this country. My own MP Michael Ancram has also supported us in this and I salute you both.

Mine is also in Don's "In Box". A brilliant statement, I bet he never got a response from Mr Brown....either of them.
