Re: Why was the PJM offered to the UK 6 months after others?
This letter is to my MP.
If you want an answer from a Minister, ask the question via your MP.
The issue here is that I cannot see how the Malaysians could possibly defer the PJM offer to the Brits. The medal is to all Commonwealth countries:
"Pingat Jasa Malaysia; This medal is awarded to the peacekeeping groups amongst the Communion countries for distinguished chivalry, gallantry, sacrifice or loyalty in upholding Peninsula of Malaya or Malaysia sovereignty during the period of Emergency and Confrontation."
I have been told it was offered to the Brits at the same time as, for example, Australia.
Did the British reject PJM via the High Commissions/FCO, twigged they'd made a diplomatic faux pas, and then try and retrieve the situation?
I can't imagine that anyone has misled Parliament, can you?!?
Let's try and find out.

Brilliant letter Barry....Oh how I wish that I had an MP so that I could emulate it.
...So all you PJM'mers who are resident in the UK and DO have an MP....why not put them to work asking Margaret Beckett the same (or other?) questions on YOUR
behalf?
Now is the time!!!

Thanks John. I know Paul has put in a lot of work on this, too.
I simply do not believe that the PJM was not discussed with the Brits before March 2005 - by that time it had been, to all intents and purposes, accepted by the Aussies (and perhaps the Kiwis, too) who know how to respond to a gracious offer for their vets.

First date PJM offered to the Brits
I have it from a good source inside the Malaysian Government that, and I quote - "The PJM was offered to all the Commonwealth countries on the same day".
Now, if some one in HMG says that they received the offer after the Aussies or the Kiwis - they are LYING.
But then that would not be something to write home about, would it?
OTOH if they have said it in Perliament then they have misled Parliament.

This is important corroboration, John.
What we are searching for is some form of 'evidence' that we can quote.
I cannot believe that the High Commissions in KL (ours) and London (Malaysian) simply did not talk about an issue that was being openly discussed all over Australia and New Zealand - and for six months at that.

Why not cast your minds back as to when you first heard or read about this award, I didn't know until May/June 05

Yes George why make a statement if it wasn't offered by Govt in Kuala Lumpur to The Brits in the first place, but then of course we came on the last Banana Boat didn't we?
