Don Touhig has tabled a PJM EDM!
An Early Day Motion, or EDM, is a motion put down ("tabled") by Members of Parliament calling for a debate on a particular subject. In practice, there is rarely time to debate EDMs nowadays and their true modern-day purpose is to enable MPs to draw attention to an issue and to canvass support for their views by inviting other Members to add their signatures in support of the motion.
Don Touhig has tabled the following EDM:
PINJAT JASA MALAYSIA MEDAL29.11.2006
Touhig, Don
That this House welcomes the decision by Her Majesty The Queen to allow veterans of the Malaysian campaign between 1957 and 1966 to accept the Pinjat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) Medal; is concerned that the Inter-Departmental Committee on the Grant of Honours, Decorations and Medals decided to advise Her Majesty not to grant permission for Malaysian veterans to wear the PJM on public occasions; and calls upon the Government to make representations to the Committee to overturn this decision.
- - - -
Ten MPs have already signed up. Don Touhig has done what he said he would do ... now it's our turn.
Please telephone, email or write to your MP asking him or her to support this brilliant EDM
Tell them the EDM Number is 356.
If you/they want to read it, it is at http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=31979&SESSION=885
Better still, read all about the current position on http://www.fight4thepjm.org/lobby_mp.htm - this page provides a list of signatories.
Barry.

Please support The Don!
This EDM a significant initiative by an ex-Defence (Veterans) Minister - Don Touhig.
The first to sign was Mark Harper - the Shadow Veterans Minister. Thank you Mark. Why don't other PJMers thank both Don and Mark:
Don Touhig: Touhigd@parliament.uk
Mark Harper: Harperm@parliament.uk
It'll only take a few minutes ... send them an email.
Other MPs email addies are on our Lobby page at http://www.fight4thepjm.org/lobby_mp_2.htm.
Thanks.
Barry

Let me add my voice to those of my brothers Barry and Paul....right now would be a real good time to send your MP an email (just as 'Valentine' has done) calling on your MP to add his/her name to the EDM.

Richard Benyon
I have written to my MP, Richard Benyon, asking him to support The Don.
I am sure he will as he has been very supportive to our cause.

Thanks, petenic. Your ongoing support from Malaysia will be much appreciated by The Don - as it is by us.

Thnaks very much, Rob, and for lobbying The Don.
I am pleased to report that even as I write, MPs are writing to me saying they are going to sign the EDM. I hope that Don Touhig's initiative will receive many signatures.
I think http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=31979&SESSION=885 is only updated once a day and so we may not see the latest list until tomorrow.
Barry
PS Visitors to the EDM at http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=31979&SESSION=885 can list sgnatories by "Party Groups" (click on the Signatures box - top right) - it will be quite revealing as names are added.
